Review:    After the screening at Sundance 2001, I kept running into Kristina Nordstrom, who runs the Ladies Movie producers' Symposium in Los Angeles. 

''Obviously, no lady would be pulled in to sex that way,'' she said. 

''Why not?'' 

''The sex in the motion picture all includes the base of the ninth inning. A lady would be killed by a man who doesn't invest energy being delicate and sweet, and demonstrating that he tends to her. There's no foreplay. She strolls in, they rip off each other's garments, and a few moments later they're in a furor. Any lady would realize that this motion picture was coordinated by a man.'' A man may realize that, as well. The film, which is overcome however not discerning, stars Mark Rylance as Jay, a previous artist, a separated spouse and father, who now functions as a barman and lives in a scarcely outfitted cabin. In an early scene, he is irate around a right hand employed to work with him behind the bar, in light of the fact that the new man is not an expert barkeep but rather is an on-screen character between occupations. The anger wells up in light of the fact that Jay fit that depiction himself until he abandoned music six years back and masochistically covered himself behind the bar.
